Factors to consider when buying a new phone
Do you just go straight ahead to purchase a phone? There is a wide variety of phones available in the market so buying a new phone without considering some factors is never the best.
In this article, we’ll look at some important factors to consider before buying a new phone.
Basically, all these factors are centered around the type of phone you need and what you intend to do with it. You want a phone that can serve your needs.
You should put the following things in consideration before you jump on the bandwagon of buying a particular phone.
Don’t worry, we have made this article simple so you don’t have to be a tech nerd to understand. Let’s go!
1. Battery capacity
In Nigeria, power supply is not so constant so the battery capacity is a very important factor unless you live where there’s superb power supply.
You may not like the idea of having to charge your phone all the time or carrying a power bank all around.
Also, what you intend to do with the phone matters. Say, you’re a gamer or you stream a lot of videos online, you should go for a battery of at least 4000mAh capacity.
If you are just an average user, you should be okay with a phone of 3000mAh battery capacity.
You want a phone that should last for at least a day.
Remember, having a stronger battery life is never a disadvantage. The higher mAh, the longer it lasts.
If you love taking pictures or if you’re into mobile photography, you should invest in getting a phone with a superb camera.
Generally, iPhones have better cameras than Android phones. Android devices like Samsung and Google Pixel have high quality cameras too.
Regardless of any brand you choose to buy, you can still get a model with a good camera. A 12MP upwards phone camera is quality but it depends on the brand too.
Phones have two types of memory. The RAM and the ROM.
RAM (random access memory) is the memory your phone uses to process applications. This memory also determines the speed of the device.
ROM (read only memory) is the memory your phone uses to store files. It is also known as internal storage. It is where your photos, apps, music, videos and other files are stored.
With this in mind, if you’re an heavy phone user(or if you play large games), you would be needing about 3/4GB RAM and about 32GB upwards ROM.
A light user would need 1/2GB ram and at least 8GB ROM
The good thing about android phones is that the ROM can be increased. All you need to do is buy a microSD card (memory card) and insert it in your phone.
You should buy at least a 16GB microSD card or more. Be sure to check that the phone supports SD cards.
4. Operating system (OS)
The operating system OS of a phone is crucial because it is what the phone runs on. So your experience using the phone is majorly determined by the OS.
There are two OS you should choose from. Either the Android OS or the iOS (that iPhones run on).
If you decide to go for Android, try buying a recent Android version( Android 9 Pie and Android 10)
Another perk is buying a phone that allows you update your Android version.
The display of a phone is another thing to consider.
If you play games a lot or watch a lot of videos, you should go for at least a 5.7 or 6 inches display size.
On the other hand, if all you do mainly on your phone is call, text, WhatsApp or Facebook, a smaller screen size might be okay.
As a benchmark, you don’t want to go below 5 inches display.
The larger the screen, the richer the media experience you’ll get.
The processor (together with the RAM) determines the speed of the device. The processor is responsible for the overall performance of a phone. There are different processors like Dual-Core, Quad-Core, Octa-Core, Snapdragon, Mediatek and others.
The processing speed of a device is measured in terms of GigaHertz (GHz). The higher the value of the GHz, the faster the speed of the processor and by extension, the faster the phone.
6. Extra security features
Your phone’s security is very crucial to protect your confidential files and apps. There are different security features like fingerprint, iris sensors or face unlock to secure your phone better with comfort.
If you really need them, you can check if the phone you want to buy has these features.
Here’s where your personal taste comes into play. We all have different views on what’s good looking. You could prefer a metal vs plastic body or curved edges against straight edges.
It all depends on you. You should use a phone that looks beautiful to you.
Read reviews of the phone you want to buy! The only time you should not do this is if you’re the first to buy the phone.
You see, the thing is reading reviews might save you from buying a hyped device. Reviews are written by real users who may be satisfied or not.
When phone companies want to sell a device, they always put their best foot forward but reviews do otherwise. After reading a few reviews and you’re satisfied, go ahead to buy that phone.
Where can I find reviews? Visit phone review websites, forums or just do a quick Google search using the format below
Phone model + review. E.g. Tecno Camon X review.
This is the most important factor especially if you are on a limited budget. You can choose to go for the best in all the factors above but your budget actually decides the type of phone you buy eventually.
Should you use your entire salary or not? Well, that depends on you. However, we at PhoneDey strongly discourage that.
Rather, what you should do is to prioritize what you want most in a phone according to the budget you have.
If there’s a particular phone model you really want and you can’t afford to buy a new one, a solution is to buy a fairly used one.
Now, you can now buy correctly if you put all the factors we have discussed into consideration. We hope you enjoyed this article. If there’s any important factor we left out, please let us know in the comments below.
