How To Fix Your Fridge That No Longer Works

I’m a refrigerator technician with 5 years of experience and overtime I have found out that over 60 percent of the fridge issues I encounter are very minor issues

If the owners come across an article such as this one on how to ” Do It Yourself ” then they will not call for a handy Man most of the times because they will be Able to fix such minor issues and save up Money that would have been used for Repairs

so listed below are the common fridge problems I get called for and how to fix it yourself

Common Problem Diagnosis For Fridge

1 Fridge works for over an hour then stops and starts on its own after 5 minutes

2 Fridge won’t work at all But working indicators show there is full supply of current

3 Fridge Compressor (Engine) Starts working and goes off almost immediately

4 Fridge works for Long, it doesn’t go off but still doesn’t freeze as it used to

Common Solution to the above listed Diagnosis

1 Fridge works for over an hour then stops and starts on its own after 5 minutes

The common fix more than 90 percent of the time according to my work experience For this Diagnosis is

To set the Thermostat regulator back to maximum. We have kids at home who will be to play with the nub of the Thermostat and might have altered the setting’s

2 Fridge won’t work at all but working indicators show there is full supply of current

Roughly explaining the function of the Thermostat : it is like a time that can set the compressor of the fridge on and off and determine when the fridge compressor goes off, so if set to Zero ,then the compressor won’t start but indicators will show supply of current,

So the common fix for this issue is to set the Thermostat back to maximum, this way your fridge works till there is cut of power supply

3 Fridge compressor (Engine) starts working and goes off almost immediately

The fix for this problem most times is just a bad overload protector (one of the two stater for a compressor, the other is called Relay)

You might be needing a screwdriver for this fix as some fridges have covers fitted with screw restricting access to the compressor

So unfasten the screws holding the cover to access the compressor, then Patiently take of the small cover protecting the starter of the compressor, identify the Overload protector take it out by patiently detaching the supply wire from it and detaching it gently from the compressor terminal

Do make sure you know what wires you took out and don’t get it mixed up. You just stop if you get too confused about this as it requires some level of handiness

Go to an electrical shop and get the exact type and number of the overload protector you took out ,now fix it according to how you removed the old one. Assemble the covers back and your fridge should work properly now

4 Fridge works for long, it doesn’t go off but still doesn’t freeze as it used to

The common reason for this is Compressor Overheating, you should make sure your fridge fan is not faulty and if your fridge doesn’t have one then make provision for it as it very effective in cooling down the compressor and you will notice a good increase in the freezing level of your fridge

I hope this helps so if you have questions please ask and please share
