iPhone 12 Pro is the seventh-best smartphone for selfie lovers

DxOMark laboratory specialists have published a verdict on the front camera of the Apple iPhone 12 Pro smartphone, which received 98 points, including 101 points for photos and 93 points for videos.

This allowed the smartphone to take only seventh place after the Huawei Mate 40 Pro (1st place and 104 points), Huawei P40 Pro, Asus ZenFone 7 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, Huawei nova 6G and Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G. Compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max and its 92 points (93 for photos and 90 for videos), the new smartphone has become noticeably better.

DxOMark notes that the iPhone 12 Pro’s selfie camera performed well overall. The exposure is quite accurate, but the dynamic range is not always enough. The details are good, but the TOF camera can simulate a nice bokeh effect. The noise is quite noticeable, if you love taking selfies in very low light, you need to know that the flash output is poor. The videos are pretty good.

Pros

  • Exposure on faces generally accurate
  • Pleasant skin tone rendering
  • High detail in bright to normal indoor conditions
  • Noise on in-focus subjects well controlled in bright light
  • Accurate depth estimation in bokeh mode
  • Wide dynamic range in videos
  • Accurate white balance in videos
  • Highly detailed videos in bright light
  • Few artifacts in videos

Cons

  • Noise visible in background
  • Occasional white balance casts
  • Clipping in high dynamic range scenes for stills
  • Fixed focus leaves more distant subjects blurry
  • Exposure is low in flash mode
  • Residual motion effects when walking
  • High noise in videos at lower light levels

DxOMark: iPhone 12 Pro Max has become Apple’s best camera phone

Fewdays ago, DxOMark specialists published a detailed test report of the main camera of the iPhone 12 Pro; the smartphone took fourth place in the ranking, gaining the same number of points as the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro had before – 128. And later a detailed camera test of the iPhone 12 Pro Max has been published.

This model differs from its younger brother in a wide-angle camera sensor, optical zoom capabilities and optical stabilization. And all these improvements paid off: the iPhone 12 Pro Max earned a total of 130 points and displaced the iPhone 12 Pro from the fourth place. The bad news is that even the most expensive and modern iPhone is still unable to compete with Huawei and Xiaomi flagships. And this despite the fact that the Huawei P40 Pro, located on the third line of the rating, will soon hit six months (not from the moment of the announcement, but from the moment of the start of sales). And Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra is not a novelty at all, unlike the new Mate 40 Pro, which takes the first place.
