Microsoft publishes the End of Service dates for Surface devices

Microsoft has pretty much established its name in the market of hardware thanks to its lineup of Surface devices. While the company struggled to make a mobile device with Nokia, its Surface lineup of tablets and laptops achieved a solid userbase. The company is continuously pushing software updates for those devices and also wants to clear with its users about this support. Today, Microsoft published a list detailing the end of service dates for its entire lineup. The list brings the Surface RT from 2012 and also includes the Surface Laptop Go released back in the last month.

This a list that basically states the “End of Support” dates for Surface devices. According to the list below, we can see that most devices are getting stable four years of software updates. However, there are a few exceptions that get five years of support. It’s really impressive when we see the Surface Pro 3 that has seven years of support. That’s one of the main benefits of getting a device from a company that controls both the hardware and software running. It’s not like Android OEMs that don’t have total control over software, neither hardware.

Worth noting that some devices on this list already passed their end of services date. The other mart will reach the end of the line in the next year. Devices such as the Surface Go, Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2, and Studio 2, which were released in 2018 will reach the end of support in 2022. According to the US-based giant, the list has been published after demands from users. The company wants to help its users to know when they can get a new device if some updates are an important part of their usage. Moreover, the list comes “to help plan and manage hardware and software deployments.”

It’s not really the end for Surface Devices

The End of Service dates reveals when Microsoft will stop pushing driver and firmware updates for the listed device. However, this list does not really mean the end of the line for these devices. The company will keep pushing future Windows OS update as well as important security patches for those devices. Besides the new “End of Services” list, Microsoft also announced today that the Windows update will take a bit longer to arrive. It’s part of a new strategy. We will know more in the coming weeks.
