Stop starting your generator the wrong way
Many people do not know that there is a right procedure to follow when starting their generator. All that they are concern about is for their generator to start by any means. As a result of this, many have been Starting their generator the wrong way. And this can shorten the generator’s lifespan.
The purpose of this article is to show you the right way to start your generator and the right way to stop your generator for long lifespan and good performance. This procedures applies to both big petrol generator and small tiger generator. Step six might be new to you.
RIGHT WAY TO START A GENERATOR
Disconnect all loads
This means that no load should be connected at the point of starting. Make sure the AC circuit breaker is in the off position. The generator may be hard to start if load is connected.
On the engine switch
Turn the engine switch to the on position. The Generator will never start if the engine switch is in the off position just as the name(off) implies.
Open fuel tap
This makes fuel to flow from the tank to the carburetor. When lock, the engine will shut down even after it has started because of lack of fuel.
Move the choke lever to the close position
Move the choke lever to the close position. This is necessary when the engine is cold. But not necessary when the engine is warm.
Start the generator
If yours is key starter, turn the key switch to the start position or pull the starter rope with fast steady pull until the engine starts, then return the choke gradually to open position.
Warm up the engine without load for 1-2minutes
Do not load the engine immediately when it starts. Allow the engine to warm up without load for about 1-2minutes upon every initial start-up. This permit the oil to circulate round the engine and makes the generator stabilize. Then your gen is now very ready for use.
Apply your loads gradually
RIGHT WAY TO OFF A GENERATOR
Disconnect all loads
You can either off the AC circuit breaker, disconnect the wires, or change over from generator. Do not off your generator while load is still connected, that is a wrong way of stopping the generator.
Allow the engine to run for about 1-2mins
After disconnecting all loads, allow the generator to run for about 1min. Don’t think you are wasting your fuel, you are doing good to the generator.
Off the generator
Turn the engine switch to the off position, or press the off button.
Close fuel tap
Close the fuel tap so that fuel will stop flowing to the carburetor. Constant pressure of fuel to the carburetor can reduce the carburetor lifespan.
