What is Insanity?

Insanity Calendar

Beach Body Insanity is a 60-day workout program designed to get you lean and in the best shape of your life. The program uses long bursts of intense exercise with short periods of rest. That allows for more calories to be burned than if you were doing steady slow exercise for an hour. You can burn up to 1,000 calories an hour (trust me you’ll feel it). Also, you’ll be burning calories for an hour after your workout!

10 insane workouts are split up and rotated for two months. At the beginning and every couple of weeks you take a “Fit Test”. There you gauge your level of progress by seeing how many repetitions you can do for certain exercises. The fittest is a challenge the first time but you will be surprised at the progress you make every time you do it.

One day you will work on burning fat, then building muscle with strength and power moves, and then pure cardio. There is an active recovery day and then a day of complete rest. You will look forward to that rest day!

In the first month, you will do that and then add an intense ab program where you don’t do any crunches.

The second month takes the same principles but it becomes even more intense. I survived the first month but when I did the second month, it felt like I was starting again from the beginning! The workouts will keep pushing your limits.

After 60 days? If you follow the program and follow a sensible diet, you will lose weight, you will be lean, you will reshape your body, your energy will skyrocket, you will feel like anything is possible if you were able to finish this program.

Does Insanity work?

In short, yes it does! Now let’s take a look because it works.

Insanity has worked for so many people because it takes long periods of intense exercise with short periods of rest. The structure allows for maximum fat burning in a short period.

High intense workouts also increase your RMR (resting metabolic rate) for up to 24 hours. Your RMR is the rate you expend energy while at rest. Your body is still burning calories up to 24 hours after a workout. This is opposed to doing a long slow endurance type of exercise. We love burning more calories doing nothing!

Insanity will increase lean muscle in your body. More muscle means more calories being burned while at rest. We love that as well. For men and women, you will get the lean athletic type of body. Women don’t worry that you will get too muscular (that’s a common myth. If it was easy to look huge, tons of guys would. It’s not easy). You will have that toned look you’ve always wanted. Men can feel confident taking off their shirts. The exercises are designed for a lean, athletic look.

Finally, the exercises keep your muscles guessing. They don’t have time to get used to it. It shocks your muscles and keeps them working hard. With this program, your muscles will work harder and harder. Though you will be doing the same exercises over a month, each time you do it, you will be able to do more, therefore burning more calories.

During each workout, you will sweat as you have never sweated before. You will be beyond out of breath. You will feel like quitting but you’re focused on a goal so you will keep going.

Losing weight and getting in shape is not just about doing Insanity. It’s about making healthy choices when eating. Do that and you will see unbelievable results.

Insanity Tips

For beginners just starting here are my tips to help you through Insanity workouts.

  • The name of the program lives up to the hype. Army personnel, marathon runners, fitness instructors who are in great shape do Insanity and say it’s the hardest thing they’ve done (you’ll see them in the videos).
  • The “warm-up” is hard. The first time you do the “warm-up” you’ll be so tired. Don’t be discouraged! You will improve.
  • Take breaks as often as you need. You will notice during the videos they have to take breaks. They cannot do all the repetitions and they’ve been doing the program longer than we have. Even Shaun T, the instructor, has to take breaks. So don’t be discouraged if you have to.
  • When starting, do as many repetitions as you can. You might have 1.5 minutes to do a movement. Do as many as you can and take a break and continue. It’s just the beginning. Do what you can.
  • Don’t pause the workout. If you can’t do anymore. That’s fine. Just let the video keep running while you catch your breath.
  • Do the Fit Test. It’s the very first thing you do in the 60-day program. It’s challenging in itself! However, write down your results. Two weeks, four weeks, six weeks, eight weeks later, you will be so amazed when you see how far you have progressed. Seeing results will keep you motivated.
  •  Be accountable. Tell friends or family your plan. Keep your friends updated on Facebook. Letting people know your goals will keep you accountable if you don’t stick with them. When you are making progress, those same friends will cheer you on.
  •  Keep the end goal in mind. Remember why you’re doing this. Remember your goal. Remember the motivation that comes from deep inside you. When it gets tough, remembering why you’re doing Insanity will keep you focused and motivated.

Insanity Results

These workouts are tough. I am not going to lie to you. These are probably not going to be for people who don’t enjoy working out or who are overweight since it may be hard on the joints, BUT I am not an expert and I may be wrong. I guess the best thing to do is consult with your doctor and find out in case you are worried if this might be for you or not.

These 60-day workouts are divided into 2 phases, each lasting 4 weeks plus there’s a recovery week in between. Phase 1 workouts are about 40 minutes long and Phase 2 workouts are about 55 minutes long. These 2 combined will give you impressive Insanity Results!

Insanity Results – What I like about Insanity Workouts

I liked it a lot that I didn’t have to go and buy any equipment. All I needed was a flat surface, enough room in the house in the front or near the TV or computer monitor to work out, and a good pair of tennis shoes. That’s it!

I also liked the fact that I began seeing Insanity Results about 10 days into the Insanity Calendar when I noticed how my clothes started fitting looser and I could begin to see my cheekbones again. According to my heart rate monitor, on average I burned close to 1000 calories each insanity DVD.

I also liked that it came with a nutrition guide that explained everything very clearly to get the most out of the workouts, while eating sensibly, fueling my body but still getting great results without feeling deprived of food.

What I didn’t like about the Insanity program

There isn’t much not to like about Shaun T’s Insanity, but after a few weeks, some of the workouts felt a little repetitive. Now, I do understand that this is a personal thing and what to me seemed a little boring, to other people might be a good thing because they might find it easier to follow without too many changes or distractions. I can see how a mother busy with children or people with full-time jobs might be inclined to just pop a DVD in the player and follow a routine without having to spend a lot of time trying to figure out what to do.
