XIAOMI TO PARTNER WITH MEDIATEK FOR CUSTOM SMARTPHONE CHIPS.
Xiaomi’s partnership with the Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek is quite old. The Chinese maker already produced smartphones featuring MediaTek chipsets due to its cost-effective value. However, this relationship was not seeing its best days until the release of the Redmi Note 8 Pro in September of 2019.
The truth is, for a few years, MediaTek was lagging behind Qualcomm, but finally managed to overcome this with the release of Helio G-series. The things became, even more, promising this year with the release of the Dimensity lineup of chipsets featuring 5G connectivity. Since the last year, we’ve seen a plethora of Redmi smartphones featuring MediaTek chipsets, and this is set to grow even more.
According to a new report, both companies will collaborate to develop a new custom made smartphone chip for future smartphones. Xiaomi has been in the search of a custom chip for its smartphones for quite some time. It has pretty much failed with the Surge lineup, and apparently, the answer for the company’s desire is on MediaTek’s hands.
XIAOMI BOND WITH MEDIATEK IS STRONG AS EVER
As aforementioned, Xiaomi’s partnership with MediaTek is pretty strong right now. So it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a Xiaomi smartphone sporting a custom-made exclusive MediaTek chipset. If you recall, the Redmi Note 9 Pro was the very first smartphone to sport the Helio G90T processor. Similarly, the company announced the Redmi 10X as the first smartphone to sport the Dimensity 820 SoC. Now, reports point out to the arrival of a smartphone featuring Dimesity 1000+ chips. We believe that there are enough reasons to believe that Xiaomi can pretty much debut a new MediaTek chipset.
Xiaomi’s move would be in line with the recent trend of OEMs shifting towards custom-built or self-developed chips for their smartphones. It would be a good way to reduce the company’s dependence on the US-based Qualcomm. After Huawei’s example, no Chinese company is feeling 100% safe with the United States. The new report comes straight from the Digital Chat Station, a known leakster, that revealed the new bit through his Weibo account. According to the tipster, the cooperation between both companies has escalated and a custom chip is planned for Xiaomi’s future generation of smartphones.
Of course, we advise you to take this report with a pinch or two of salt. Despite Digital Chat Station crescent reliability, this is something that still needs to be confirmed by Xiaomi or MediaTek. We’ll be keeping an eye fs about this partnership.
